As the Allied forces approach Paris in August 1944, German Colonel Von Waldheim is desperate to take all of France's greatest paintings to Germany. He manages to secure a train to transport the valuable art works even as the chaos of retreat descends upon them. The French resistance however wants to stop them from stealing their national treasures but have received orders from London that they are not to be destroyed. The station master, Labiche, is tasked with scheduling the train and making it all happen smoothly but he is also part of a dwindling group of resistance fighters tasked with preventing the theft. He and others stage an elaborate ruse to keep the train from ever leaving French territory.

Movie Parental Guide

nudity None.
violence One vicious and upsetting massacre of innocent civilians by a turret gun. (Mostly offscreen and bloodless, except for brief shots of the aftermath). Multiple bloodless shootings. One sad offscreen execution of a conductor (we hear and watch the gunmen and see part of the obscured body slouch to the ground). A man is hit with a shovel and thrown off of a train, a train station is bombed, a fighter plane attacks a small train with bullets, but it escapes. The main character is shot in the leg after jumping off of a train and runs with a limp for a portion of the film. He survives. Several suspenseful scenes. Some verbal threats or references to violence. The main villain is machine-gunned to death by the main character.
profanity A few uses of "damn", "hell", and one use of "bastards".
alcohol Some characters momentarily drink and smoke.
frightening There are many suspenseful scenes throughout the film involving getting the train out of Germany and into France. The subject matter of WWII, the vicious Nazis, and their use and murdering of innocent French citizens as collateral damage may be upsetting. The scene involving the execution of a likable conductor could also be seen as upsetting. The ruthless Nazi antagonist could also be unsettling, especially due to his ruthless personality. Suggested MPAA Rating: PG for war violence, thematic elements, some language, and smoking.
