Tom Ripley is a calculating young man who believes it's better to be a fake somebody than a real nobody. Opportunity knocks in the form of a wealthy U.S. shipbuilder who hires Tom to travel to Italy to bring back his playboy son, Dickie. Ripley worms his way into the idyllic lives of Dickie and his girlfriend, plunging into a daring scheme of duplicity, lies and murder.

Movie Parental Guide

nudity Sex is implied though all that is briefly seen is bare legs and a woman's bathing suit bottoms around her ankles. A nude man's backside is shown as he gets out of a bathtub, but it is dark and shadowy. Another man looks at him for a second. There are references to homosexuality - both verbal and physical actions. Two brief instances in which a man's genitals can be seen. In the first scene, his crotch area is quite shaded, but it's clear enough to see. The second time it's shown as a man stands up, and is very brief. Both scenes are a blink-and-you'll-miss-it type of scene
violence -A man hits another man over the head with an oar then proceeds to beat him to death. (Blood is seen on and surrounding them. Only the first blow is actually seen.) -A person is beaten to death with a stone bust. (The person's bloody head is seen as well as blood and brain matter on the bust.) -Choking sounds are heard as a man strangles another man. -A body is seen floating in the ocean. The corpse is taken and dragged somewhere. -A woman hits a man repeatedly. -A man slaps another man's face and arms repeatedly. -A man falls off his moped and has welts on one side of his face.
profanity 4 F-words, a few anatomical references, a scatological reference, a mild obscenity and a couple of insults.
alcohol Brief drinking. Many characters smoke throughout.
frightening The two brief killing scenes are brutal. A floating body is shown. There is a frightening scene when the 2-times murderer is approaching a girl with intentions to kill her as well.
