nudity There are two bizarre scenes where a woman is seen to sit on a clothed man's crotch and rub against it to sexually arouse the man. While the scenes are sexual in nature, they do not contain any nudity. This scene is also played with humor and most will find it funny. Consistent with lanthimos' style you will find some disturbing dialogue on this frontier but nothing out of the ordinary for him. Certainly falls well short of dogtooth and is always in an enlightening context. Two mildly graphic sex scenes. Some dialogue features allusions and detailing of sexual violence or violence during sexual acts which can be disturbing in the context of the film.
violence A woman jumps to her death, we do not see the jump but we see the aftermath and the twitching body with blood. A woman tells a man she has kicked his dog to death, we do not see the actual act, but we see the aftermath of the dog's corpse for many second where their is a large amount of blood as well as flesh around the stomach. We also see the blood on the woman's shoes. - Incredibly disturbing and hard to watch Some of the stronger scenes involve one where a man's hand is forcibly held inside a toaster as it is being heated up as a punishment; a blind woman struggling with another woman while holding a knife before stabbing the latter in the stomach; scenes of the characters being hunted like animals in the forest as they are shot at with tranquilizer darts, etc.
profanity Certainly mild for a Lanthimos film, although consistent with the premise you will find some sexual references which can be disturbing due to the lack of emotion and intimacy they are regarded with. The are some uses of the f-word. Mild profanities.
alcohol People are shown drinking alcohol on a few occasions.
frightening All of the characters speak in an incredibly blunt way mostly devoid of any real emotion, this is not so much disturbing or frightening but it does add to the disturbing dialogue and acts that the characters say or do. A woman chokes on an olive while a man sits and watches her, she is all right though the scene. This is played for black humor. A man holds a steak knife right to his eye and attempts to gouge them out, we never see him do it, but it's arguably the most disturbing sequence of the film and is incredibly hard to watch. After a woman tells a man that she's kicked his dog to death, she imitates the dog's death cries. Very disturbing. We see a man who no longer has his lips, we don't see what's below the bandages but a woman relays a gruesome story about why he doesn't have them. The dialogue at times in this film has some very disturbing and graphic descriptions of violent acts. Including descriptions of sexually violent or sexualised violence that can be disturbing. A man has his hand jammed into a toaster as punishment for masturbation. This is a film made specifically for adult audiences.
