Peter Parker has finally managed to piece together the once-broken parts of his life, maintaining a balance between his relationship with Mary-Jane and his responsibility as Spider-Man. But more challenges arise for our young hero. Peter's old friend Harry Obsourne has set out for revenge against Peter; taking up the mantle of his late father's persona as The New Goblin, and Peter must also capture Uncle Ben's real killer, Flint Marko, who has been transformed into his toughest foe yet, the Sandman. All hope seems lost when suddenly Peter's suit turns jet-black and greatly amplifies his powers. But it also begins to greatly amplify the much darker qualities of Peter's personality that he begins to lose himself to. Peter has to reach deep inside himself to free the compassionate hero he used to be if he is to ever conquer the darkness within and face not only his greatest enemies, but also...himself.

Movie Parental Guide

nudity Mary Jane wears a somewhat revealing blue dress when she sings on stage. No nudity. Throughout the film, Peter attempts to propose to MJ. Gwen Stacy has an upside down kiss with Spider Man, which Mary Jane refers to as their kiss (from the first movie). Mary Jane and Peter share an intimate/passionate kiss. Betty Brant wears slightly revealing tops. Venom/Eddie makes a suggestive remark about his "spider-sense tingling.. if you know what I'm talking about". Peter, while under the guise of the black symbiote, seduces Betty upfront, which leads into quite a sexual moment between the two almost kissing before being stopped by Jonah. Harry and Mary Jane briefly kiss, although she stops herself before it goes farther. Harry follows up this event by telling Peter in a later scene before they fight, saying how much he enjoyed it when she kissed him. Gwen Stacy wears a fairly revealing pink shirt and long skirt in one scene. Mary Jane and Peter share a loving embrace in the final scene.
violence Harry and Peter get into a fight and Harry gets thrown into a window and his face gets torn up. Quite bloody. Harry suffers a dense concussion that gives him short-term memory throughout most of act one. Peter throws a pumpkin bomb into Harry's face, disfiguring it. Slightly graphic. Spider Man and Sand Man fight throughout. Sand Man and Spider Man' second fight inside a large underground subway is particularly brutal. Spider Man and many other villains get into fights and it becomes pretty intense. Peter pushes Eddie into a glass picture frame. Also, Peter violently pushes Harry into a wall. Peter gets into a scuffle with some ushers at a bar, i.e. pinning one against the wall, throwing guys across the floor, and ends with Peter slapping MJ, who violently hits the ground, although no bruises are scene. Intense. Harry dies by villain holding device with sharp spears into his body. Some blood is present. Villain then violently tosses the wounded Harry into wooden boxes, and falls down a metal shaft, hitting the ground hard, with MJ looking on. A flying skate board shoots out blades. On a newsbroadcast, Sand Man is shown to be throwing armored cars around. On the same broadcast, Venom is shown murdering a number of NYPD officers. Brief, but bloody and disturbing. Peter goes ontop a church tower where he proceeds to rip off the symbiote suit, with its liquid-like claws violently clinging to stay on his body as he screams in pain. Violent. Eddie Brock transforms into Venom - as the symbiote attaches itself to his arms, face, and torso as he yells and writhes in pain. It also slithers its way into his body, making him unvisibly puke. Disturbing and quite graphic. Venom dies by Peter tossing a pumpkin bomb into symbiote path, with Eddie leaping into the fray as the bomb detonates, killing them both. Shocking. Many other scenes of intense violence.
profanity 1 use of piss A use of "ass" One "what the hell" Other mild remarks Jameson is hot-boiled through most of the movie, constantly shouting insults at co-workers.
alcohol A alcohol is seen thrown by Harry and is burning. Harry sips a martini glass. Peter holds a glass of alcohol. Jameson takes blood pressure medication, as Betty points out "wife told me to tell you to watch the anger".
frightening The scene where Harry dies is emotional. Towards the end, Venom tries to choke Spider-Man by shooting webs that "connect" around his neck and a large version of Sand-Man hits Spider-Man repeatedly with his enormous fist almost killing him. EDITOR'S CUT: Nearing into the film' third act, Flint Marko's wife, Emma, and his daughter, Penny, sit at a park bench during the daytime, presumably waiting for Flint to arrive in order to spend some quality family time. Due to Flint' absence, Emma comforts a depressed Penny, telling her not to "get her hopes up"; She tells Penny that her father can sometimes make mistakes and not keep to his own promises. They are about to leave when Penny spots a large sandcastle in the middle of the playpark. In awe, Penny, with aid from her arm and leg brace, walks toward the mysteriously built structure and kneels down. Her face lights up when she sees a hand form onto the exterior of the castle; Penny places hers onto it, and continues to embrace the sandcastle with a warm feeling of comfort. Emma calls for Penny, who gets up off the ground. As Penny starts to leave, she looks back, yet the sandcastle has vanished. With a worried yet hopeful look on her face, Penny leaves with her mom. As the two part from the playround, an unsuspecting Flint watches. Feeling hopeless, Flint makes his final remark "I swear to you, you won't stand in my way again". This is considered depressing. It is revealed that the killer of Peter's Uncle was actually someone else and that he is alive. Peter is upset about this and tries to find the killer and kill him. This might be frightening to some. EDITOR'S CUT: There is a scene where after breaking up with Mary Jane on the bridge, Peter goes back to his apartment to contemplate, as the camera pans around his bed, we see him in tears. As this is happening, a faint, haunting noise peers Peter's attention as he looks on cautiously yet is mysteriously drawn into its presence; the voice comes from inside the chest in his closet, containing the symbiote costume. Peter kneels in front of the chest, and opens it up. You see the symbiote costume moving inside and low breathing is heard. Peter forms an unsettling smile, pulling the suit out of the chest as dark/brooding music is played throughout. This is very disturbing. Harry's face is disfigured after one of his own bombs has been thrown at him. You can see the his disfigured side of his face. This might be unsettling for some. EDITOR'S CUT: Following Peter' attempt to confide with Harry (who now sports a slightly grotesque disfigured face), and exiting the balcony, Harry looks distraught. Turning around, he spots a cracked picture of him, Mary Jane, and Peter together. Picking it up, Harry starts to cry, and the scene ends. The symbiote' effect on Peter, and Venom, in appearance and actions, are frightening and unsettling. The ending of the film is emotional and heartfelt, as the two share a lasting embrace, conforming into a slow dance. EDITOR'S CUT: The alternate/extended (originally rejected) score by Golden Globe nominated composer-writer Christopher Young throughout increases the drama, i.e. a new love theme for Peter & MJ, Harry's theme, Flint and Penny' theme, and Aunt May' theme; see HERE (http://www.movie-censorship.com/report.php?ID=628350) for comparisons/details. MPAA/USA - Rated PG-13 for sequences of intense action violence. BBFC/UK - Rated 12A (strong fantasy violence, moderate horror). Recommended Rating (BOTH cuts) - PG-13 for Sequences of Intense Violence and Menace, Action and Destruction, Frightening Images, Some Language, Sexuality, and Mature Thematic Material.
