After the closure of their shipyard in Northern Spain, a few former workers: Santa, José, Lino, Amador, Sergei and Reina keep in touch. They meet mainly at a bar owned by their former colleague Rico. Santa is the most superficially confident and the unofficial leader of the group. A court case hangs over him relating to a shipyard lamp he smashed during protest against the closure. José is bitter that his wife, Ana, is employed when he is not. The gap between them is widening and he is fearful that she will leave him for a co-worker. Despite arthritic legs, Ana endures night shifts at a fish factory and thinks her looks are now lost. Not everyone seems to agree including her boss. Lino, an aging family man doggedly pursuing positions beyond his qualifications. The oldest member of the group, Amador, has degenerated into alcoholism after being abandoned by his wife; maintaining an increasingly transparent pretense that his wife will soon return from holiday.

Movie Parental Guide

nudity A woman is seen wearing jeans and a bra. Later, her husband kisses her neck and caresses her covered breast. No nudity is seen. A man and woman are seen dressing after apparently having sex, while her infant waits just outside the door. It is not clear whether or not she is a prostitute - but the man does reveal that he does not know her name. No nudity is seen. An illicit relationship or, at least, attraction is presented between an adult man (~35-45) and a 15-year-old girl. This is never acted upon in any less-than-innocent way. A couple of jokes discuss a character's possible cuckoldry.
violence The film begins with what appears to be real newsreel footage from the actual Port of Vigo shipyard riots. Police and protestors violently engage each other with tear gas, rocks, fists and feet. Burning barricades are seen, as are unconscious men. A man aggressively and angrily confronts a banker by whom he feels slighted. SPOILER: A character is seen just after committing suicide.
profanity The film's dialogue is replete with Spanish profanities, which the English subtitles render with high fidelity.
alcohol A major portion of the film takes place in a bar with characters drinking heavily. Four men drink hard liquor while one of them is babysitting a toddler. A marijuana leaf sticker is seen on a teenager's dresser.
frightening There is an extended, highly realistic riot scene in the opening credits (see above). One scene examines at length the squalid living conditions of a character, who dwells in filth, without running water, heat or food. It is very moving and bleak. SPOILER: A woman packs a duffle bag and prepares to leave her unemployed, alcoholic husband. SPOILER: A character is seen on a rooftop having jumped from his window to his death.
