Seymour Krelborn is a nerdy orphan working at Mushnik's, a flower shop in urban Skid Row. He harbors a crush on fellow co-worker Audrey Fulquard, and is berated by Mr. Mushnik daily. One day as Seymour is seeking a new mysterious plant, he finds a very mysterious unidentified plant which he calls Audrey II. The plant seems to have a craving for blood and soon begins to sing for his supper.

nudity Audrey wears a low-cut dress. Audrey II is slightly phallic. Audrey II tries to bite a woman's rear end, wiggling his tongue as he does. Some S&M innuendos between Orin and Audrey with two mentions of handcuffs. Orin angrily calls Audrey a slut. Though the masochist character is played for comic relief, his banter with Orin is somewhat sexual. Audrey II mentions "nookie" in a song. Audrey briefly talks about her sordid past and a night spot where she wore lewd outfits for money. Audrey II lifts Audrey's skirt up with his vines. Seymour gets his pants pulled down and his boxers are revealed.
violence A man-eating plant eats several cast members. Songs involving the plant often make references to blood and killing. Audrey is seen with a black eye in one scene and a broken arm in another, both given to her off-screen from her sadistic boyfriend Orin. Seymour feeds the small Audrey II from droplets of his own blood. In later scenes, a larger Audrey II is sucking eagerly from Seymour's fingers. In each of Orin's scenes, his sadistic nature is played comically, but can be disturbing to some viewers. Orin commits many comically violent acts during the song "Dentist!". In it, he makes references to injuring animals including bashing a cat's head, he hits a nurse in the face twice, knees a teenage patient in the groin, and jams dental instruments into patients' mouths to cause pain. Orin slaps Audrey a few times in one scene (shown in silhouette). A masochist, enters Orin's dental office for pain. A picture of an animal's diseased mouth is briefly shown for comic relief. Seymour holds Orin at gunpoint in one scene. Seymour chops up a body in an alley and feeds it to the plant who eats it eagerly. Seymour backs another character into Audrey II's open mouth. Audrey II attempts to eat a third character. In Audrey II's battle with Seymour, the plant's full menacing nature comes through and Seymour's life is threatened many times. A gun and ax are wielded and Audrey II destroys the flower shop. A character dies by electrocution.
profanity The plant has an urban dialect and uses profanity in dialogue and in song. Four uses of the word "shit", a few uses of "goddamn" and "goddamnit". Audrey II tells Seymour he is going to bust his balls right before ramming a vine between his legs.
alcohol A man inhales laughing gas as a drug and dies from an overdose in full view.
frightening Younger viewers may not understand the Greek chorus device, and may be disturbed as to why the three doo-wop girls are so seemingly indifferent to the bloodshed. The scenes with Orin can be disturbing as previously mentioned. Audrey II grows from a tiny cute little plant into a trash-talking, life-threatening "mean green mother" with sharp pointed teeth who fills the entire flower shop. The plant's appetite for human blood and the subsequent killings can be disturbing. Once Seymour discovers the plant's bloodlust, he faces the moral dilemma of whether or not to kill people and feed them to it in order to be rewarded. He is also not punished for his Faustian crimes in the movie ending (which differs from the play's original ending).
