From the sight of a police officer this movie depicts the life in New York's infamous South Bronx. In the center is "Fort Apache", as the officers call their police station, which really seems like an outpost in enemy's country. The story follows officer Murphy, who seems to be a tuff cynic, but in truth he's a moralist with a sense for justice.

The film starts with two police officers being murdered inside their car by a woman with a revolver, leaving bloodshed and brain splattering on the car windscreen. Also a riot scene takes place on a rooftop, with a young man being thrown from it and another shoot-out with police officers in a hospital office. Some scenes of blood are also found to be present in this scene as well.
profanity Several uses of the word "Fuck". On the Region 1 USA DVD case, one chapter (Chapter 21) is titled as ' "You Shut The Fuck Up!" '.
alcohol Scenes of characters smoking, possibly some drugs as well. Also some scenes alcohol being drunk inside a club and bar. Drug deals are made inside a ruined tenament and hospital and Ticotin's "Isabella" is found to be a junkie and is overdosed to keep her from telling about her dealers' activities. Grier's "Charlotte" is also a druggie (PCP) who kills two rookies in the film's beginning and a stranded motorist that she lured into a vacant building.
frightening The opening scene with the woman shooting the police officers in the police car could be quite shocking, and the riot scene with bodies flying off the roof top during the police shoot out is also shocking as is the hospital's hostage situation.
