violence We see Oskar's mother looking out the window from her office complex to see the World Trade Center in flames, as she is on the phone with Thomas, who is inside the towers. At home, Oskar watches the first tower collapse on TV. We see in an odd sort of way, Thomas falling from the towers to his death. Oskar keeps printed pictures of the 9/11 "jumpers," and wonders if one of them is his father. Oskar takes it all out on himself, pinching himself brutally. We briefly see his torso covered in pinch marks, some of them drawing blood. He gets into a heated argument with his mother, and lashes out at inanimate objects sometimes. Because of his sensitive mind and his harrowing experience, everyday things: planes flying a little too low, trains, bridges, etc. carry a sense of menace that's vividly conveyed to moviegoers.
profanity Oskar, several times, and his doorman, once, engage in wordplay that pushes nearly into profanity, sounding, spoken rapidly, such as "fuckozawa you" twice in place of fuck. Also we hear a load use of dickhead and arsehole, spaz and retard.
alcohol Thomas and his wife are seen drinking wine, and a man tries to hide a bottle of whiskey in one scene. Oskar warns a man that he is not allowed to smoke inside and it is implied Oskar stubs out the cigarette.
frightening Oskar retells the story of how his father left messages and called from the North tower. However Oskar remarks he was too afraid to pick up the phone. The line cuts off and Oskar looks at the TV to observe the death of his father by the North tower collapsing right away. Much of the movie is very intense and emotional. A scene features Oskar playing his father's phone messages from 9/11 to the renter, and the renter (who can't speak) begs him to stop with post it notes, but Oskar doesn't.
