The story of Michael Berg, a German lawyer who, as a teenager in the late 1950s, had an affair with an older woman, Hanna, who then disappeared only to resurface years later as one of the defendants in a war crimes trial stemming from her actions as a concentration camp guard late in the war. He alone realizes that Hanna is illiterate and may be concealing that fact at the expense of her freedom.

nudity Sex & Nudity : 8/10 Multiple simulated sex scenes involving full frontal nudity of a boy We see a side view of a woman's groin and full-frontal male nudity of a 15-year-old character (but an 18-year-old actor) in a bathing scene. There are a lot of rears and upper female nudity images, however. The sex scenes are, for the most part, played as montages, so we only catch glimpses of activity. A lot of extended scenes are before or after the fact. The guy has a relationship with another girl his own age, but we do not see much. One scene implies sex. The first half of the movie focuses almost exclusively on the love life of the two main characters. The woman is in her thirties while the guy is only 15. While the relationship is a metaphor for the woman's guilt for being a Nazi and not depicted in a crude manner. At the start of the film, a lady can be sen nude from behind. The camera shows a flash of full frontal nudity as she walks off. Kate Winslet's character flashes pubic hair when putting on a pair of stockings. The guy changes out of his clothes to take a bath. The woman looks at him when he changes. He covers his genitals, however pubic hair is shown. He enters the bath, showing butt and a flash of genitals when he turns around. The camera pans down on him taking a bath, however his hands cover his genitals. The woman seduces the boy when she brings him a towel. Rear nudity is shown as the boy drops the towel and turns around. Both show their butts. They kiss. A few brief shots of the woman and the boy having sex. The woman is riding the boy, showing her breasts. The woman lies down on a table and the boy has sex with her. Her breasts are shown. The extended version of this clip has the woman enter the room and sit on the table, fully nude. She flashes her pubic hair as they have sex. The boy kisses the side of the woman's butt when they are nude in bed. Nothing is explicitly shown, however the woman's butt is partially visible. The boy is lying down nude on a bed. The woman enters and flashes butt and vagina as she sits down on the bed. Her breasts are visible when she lies on top of him. The woman angrily disrobes and enters the bath. Breasts are visible. The woman is in a lake with a wet bra. Her nipples are extremely visible through the see-through bra. The woman cleans the boy after he takes a bath. He is fully nude. Both butt and penis are clearly visible. When in prison, the woman changes clothes. Her bare back and left breast is shown.
violence Violence & Gore: 1/10 It's implied that a character commits suicide by hanging herself. We hear stories in a court room of a character's involvement in the killings of concentration camp prisoners. She is found guilty and is sent to prison on a life sentence . We see a character vomit in the beginning of the movie, he is diagnosed with scarlet fever. Another character helps him go home, and he makes a full recovery. Some arguments here and there, but nothing major happens.
profanity Profanity: 2/10 A few uses of "hell" and "damn". One use of "Nazi whore."
alcohol Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking: 3/10 Several characters smoke occasionally.
frightening Frightening/Intense Scenes: 1/10 There are no particularly frightening scenes. The first half of the movie focuses on the sexual relationship of the main characters, while the last half revolves around a tense court case. The protagonist goes through an old concentration camp and we can see pairs of shoes that represent the number of victims that died there. Not appropriate for anyone under 14.
