Former pool hustler "Fast Eddie" Felson decides he wants to return to the game by taking a pupil. He meets talented but green Vincent Lauria and proposes a partnership. As they tour pool halls, Eddie teaches Vincent the tricks of scamming, but he eventually grows frustrated with Vincent's showboat antics, leading to an argument and a falling-out. Eddie takes up playing again and soon crosses paths with Vincent as an opponent.

nudity A woman is seen nude in a bathroom briefly. (Only her breasts are visible for 2 seconds.) People are in bed together, but they are fully clothed. (they're talking) There's the old joke "When do you get off" "five o'clock" "Not without me you don't." Carmen lets Eddie into her room wearing only a shirt and panties. Eddie grabs her and threatens to have sex with her. As part of a con Eddie and Carmen kiss, Eddie grabs her butt. A man worries about his girlfriend's presence in a seedy pool hall, commenting that "half the guys in here are probably rapists." She then counters that maybe he's in danger because he's a "pretty boy". After a man gets a bloody lip in a fight his girlfriend comments that he "looks sexy". Near the end Vincent and Carmen come by Eddie's hotel room. Eddie and Janelle are wearing bathrobes and it's implied that they may have been having sex.
violence A fist fight at a pool hall involving several punches being thrown and a man getting a bloody lip. Not very graphic. Vincent roughly handles Eddie and Carmen at one point.
profanity 11 uses of the F-word, and other swear words.
alcohol Some casual drinking. Eddie is a liquor salesman and has an opening monologue trying to sell some of his liquor. Cigarette smoking by various characters. Eddie references people playing pool on amphetamines. A minor character is a cocaine user and there's a couple of references about him wiping his nose after having snorted coke.
