Martin Scorsese’s Oscar-winning biopic about the life of film-maker and aviation pioneer Howard Hughes from 1927 to 1947, during which time he became a successful film producer and an aviation magnate while simultaneously growing more unstable due to severe obsessive-compulsive disorder. After a scene from 1914, which may explain his later fear of dirt and disease, the film starts in 1927 during Hughes' filming of the World War I aviation film "Hell's Angels". He's 22 years old, has inherited the family's fortune and tool company, but wants to spend his time making film instead. However, he soon finds himself just as involved in the aviation industry, buying an airline and developing new planes.

Movie Parental Guide

nudity 5/10 A man and woman have sex. Nothing is shown. A man and a woman make out. He puts his hand in her dress caressing her breasts. Some talk about 'screwing.' A man's bare buttocks are shown several times.
violence 8/10 A man flies a plane, the engine blows out, the plane falls toward the ground, hits the roof of a house and the wing slices through another house, it then crashes into the ground and the engine explodes; the pilot is trapped in the cockpit, he pulls on his leg, we hear something tear and he screams. While he's is trying to get out, his face is seen with blood streaming down it and his shirt is also spattered in blood. This is graphic and shown for at least a minute, with close-ups as well. When he opens the hatch, flames blow into his face and he falls in flames off the plane and onto the ground -- we see him charred and bloody and hear of the extensive life threatening injuries he sustained. A man flies a plane, it runs out of gas and drifts toward the ground, and then slides some distance through a field; the pilot ends up with a minor injury on his foot (we see a bloody sock later). A man shoves a woman, and she hits him in the head with a statue (we see blood on his forehead). A woman crashes her car into another car repeatedly (no one appears injured). Several men fight on a dance floor, we hear punches landing and see a few men fall on the floor. A man washes his hands until he bleeds. In a movie, a man is shot during a duel, a plane crashes into a blimp, it explodes, and the pilot is burned; also in a movie two planes crash together and burst into flames. A man appears to be having a seizure (he jerks and convulses and balls up on the floor). A woman talks about her brother having committed suicide. Because of the graphic plane crash, this movie sits somewhere between PG-13 and R.
profanity 6/10 1 F-word, 9 sexual references, 7 scatological terms, 21 anatomical terms, 53 mild obscenities, 2 derogatory terms for African-Americans, 1 derogatory term for homosexuals, 1 derogatory term for the English, 38 religious profanities, 23 religious exclamations
alcohol 3/10 Lots of smoking and drinking of alcoholic beverages.
frightening 8/10 A mentally unstable man locks himself in a room for several months. He is seen as emaciated and lacks hygiene. He urinates into bottles, and throws things. Overall Movie: 30/50 OFFICIAL MPAA - Rated PG-13 for thematic elements, sexual content, nudity, language and a crash sequence. OFFICIAL BBFC - (12A): infrequent strong language, injury detail.
