nudity Tarzan wears a lioncloth. G/PG There is a reference to Tarzan only being a "girlhood fantasy" of Jane's. PG After Jane finishes her chalk sketch Archimedes asks her if she and the blackboard need a moment, to which she laughs and tells her father to knock it off. Children won't understand this joke, but adults will get it PG When Tarzan first meets Jane, he puts the side of his head in between her breasts to listen to her heartbeat, in an innocent way. However, Jane acts uncomfortable during this moment and breathes heavily. Her breasts are defined under the dress. Very short scene. PG Jane is briefly shown wearing a bikini-like lioncloth and top, similar to Tarzan's, in the ending scene. G/PG
violence A leopard kills a baby gorilla. The effect is lessened by the action occurring off-screen and being rapidly cut from as it occurs in the middle of the opening montage. PG The leopard kills Tarzan's human parents but we only see the aftermath when a gorilla views their dead bodies (only their legs are shown, and their torsos are covered). In this same scene, we also see bloody human handprints on the floor of the cabin indicating a struggle. Also, as the mother of the deceased baby gorilla wanders around the treehouse where Tarzan and his deceased parents lived, she walks over a empty loaded shotgun with bullets on the floor, indicating that the father was attempting to kill the leopard. PG/PG13 Tarzan fights the leopard that killed his human parents. He is slashed across the chest and manages to kick the leopard into a pit. Tarzan then kills the leopard off-screen with a spear and we see the leopard's dead body (although the leopard appears to have experienced a peaceful death). PG Once onboard a ship, Tarzan falls from a great height and is injured. He is then punched in the stomach and beaten. PG A silverback gorilla is shot at and killed (bloodlessly). PG The violent death of Mr. Clayton is of particular note. While we don't actually see his body, his shadow clearly shows that he has been hanged after his neck is wrapped around a vine while falling from a great height. It is also important to note that Tarzan notices the danger for Clayton and tries to save him unsuccessfully PG/PG13
profanity None.
alcohol Clayton drinks a glass of wine and offers some to Tarzan. It is made very clear that Tarzan does not drink any. G
frightening There is a suspenseful action sequence involving the persistent endangerment of an infant in which a gorilla tries to save it repeatedly from a leopard. The opening sequence with the leopard killing the baby gorilla and Tarzan's parents could be frightening and saddening to children. A fast-paced action sequence features Jane being chased by vicious sharp-teethed baboons. Two characters are almost crushed by a detached tree. Tarzan's gorilla family is hunted by poachers and the scene in which a few of them are caught while Tarzan is racing there to save them could be intense. A jump scene where a leopard attacks very suddenly out of no where Tarzan fights the leopard that killed his parents (although he does not know it is the same leopard) and kills it Clayton and Tarzan engage in a fight which ends with Clayton's death by hanging, though only the shadow is seen. Several times Kerchak roars ferociously at Jane and the other humans. His immense size and anger might frighten small children but it is important to note that he acts this way because he perceives them as a threat. The death of Kerchak towards the end of the film as a result of his injury at the hands of Clayton can be very saddening. BBFC - (U): mild threat, scenes of danger.
