Both humans hunting animals with guns and animal predators hunting in the wild, is a motif of the film. Though the film isn't that violent, most of the movie is dark, suspenseful, and frightening. It deals with themes about death, love, sexuality, psychosis, murder, jealousy, and incest. A majority of the themes are not directly depicted, but implied and/or left to the viewer's interpretation.
An attempted rape is depicted; the perpetrator's neck is then snapped and he is buried. An 18-year-old girl later masturbates while thinking of this murder (see Sex & Nudity for more information).
The death of a child and subsequent institutionalization of the older child responsible is a major plot point. The older child is never shown in the act of killing the younger one, but it is unmistakably suggested and the scene may be very upsetting.
