With the disappearance of hack horror writer Sutter Cane, all Hell is breaking loose...literally! Author Cane, it seems, has a knack for description that really brings his evil creepy-crawlies to life. Insurance investigator John Trent is sent to investigate Cane's mysterious vanishing act and ends up in the sleepy little East Coast town of Hobb's End.

Movie Parental Guide

nudity 2/10 An old man is shown naked, hand-cuffed to his wife's ankle, but due to the camera angle, no explicit nudity is seen. The main female character throws herself at the main male character twice. Kissing only. Some sexual innuendo.
violence 8/10 A crazy man wielding an axe is about to kill a man, but is stopped by two policemen, who shoot him dead. An evil and violent policeman is shown beating a man with a club. This sequence is shown 3 or 4 times during the movie; in two occasions the policeman's face is deformed. A man is hacked to pieces (off-screen) by a group of axe-wielding people; all of them have deformed faces. We see the axes going up and down and we hear the man screaming. The only blood shown is dripping from the axes. A woman is seen eating a piece of the dead man's flesh. Throughout the movie, a few people become infected and transform into tentacled monsters. An old lady is seen transformed into a tentacled monster, cutting her husband into pieces. We hear the old man screaming in pain and we briefly see one of his legs being amputated. In another scene, a woman is seen behind a door; we see the shadow of her body behind the closed door as well as shadows of big tentacles moving, then we see smaller tentacles under the door, before they hide inside the woman's body. The woman opens the door, her appearance is normal but we know she is possessed. She throws a man out of the room and he runs away. An old lady with a deformed face, who's eyes are rolled back into her head, hits a car. No blood. A woman crawls toward a man with her body twisted. As she twists her back, you hear the snapping of bones, and she laughs in a creepy way. A group of large drooling monsters chase a man. They do not attack anyone, but their appearance is very frightening. Several zombie-like children are shown with blood on their mouths. A man shoots himself in the head (off-screen). A woman's eyes bleed. A woman touches a man's head; the appearance of the man's front is normal, but as the camera pans over, we see the back of his body, which is a horrid monster/demon, merged to him. A man kills another man with an axe (off-screen). A few people go insane after reading a horror book; their eyes drip blood and their behavior is extremely violent. The radio speaks about the recent outbreak of violence due to such people. At the end of the movie there are very few people who are still normal, most of humanity has become mad killers.
profanity 6/10 Strong language is rare. A couple of "shit" and "fuck". The main theme of profanity in this movie is delivered by a mad writer who claims to be God. His fans are faithful and obsessive believers, and he creates the world as he writes, in any way he wishes.
alcohol 4/10 A man drinks beer at a bar. The main character smokes a few times throughout the movie. In one scene he attempts to light a cigarette, but is stopped by an old lady.
frightening 9/10 The whole movie is very creepy, dark and psychological, with several jump scenes and some violent moments as well. Lots of people go insane after reading a horror book; their eyes bleed and their behaviour is extremely violent. The scenes where infected people transform into tentacular monsters are grisly. The contorted woman scene is painful and creepy to look at. The scene which depicts a demon merged to a man is pretty disgusting. Overall: 29/50 - Absolutely not for sensitive viewers due to its frightening nature, themes and strong horror images. MPAA/USA - Rated R for images of horror, and for language. BBFC/UK - Rated 15 (no reason provided).
