Filmed over 12 years with the same cast, Richard Linklaters BOYHOOD is a groundbreaking story of growing up as seen through the eyes of a child named Mason (a breakthrough performance by Ellar Coltrane), who literally grows up on screen before our eyes. Starring Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette as Masons parents and newcomer Lorelei Linklater as his sister Samantha, BOYHOOD charts the rocky terrain of childhood like no other film has before. Snapshots of adolescence from road trips and family dinners to birthdays and graduations and all the moments in between become transcendent, set to a soundtrack spanning the years from Coldplays Yellow to Arcade Fires Deep Blue. BOYHOOD is both a nostalgic time capsule of the recent past and an ode to growing up and parenting.

Movie Parental Guide

nudity A dad talks to his daughter about the protection of condoms. It is a humorous 'awkward' scene but dealt realistically. An unclothed man and woman are seen sharing a bed, presumably having had extra-marital sexual intercourse. They are mostly under a sheet. Characters discuss sex several times (can be extremely explicit). Young boys ogling and making comments about women in a lingerie catalog. Young boys looking at porn online. Screen of what they are looking at is somewhat obscured but still visible.
violence A man - father of two and stepfather of two - is an abusive alcoholic. In one scene, his wife is on the ground, crying, and it is implied that he hit her. Later, the same man drinks at the dinner table and throws dishes at his son and stepson, both preteens. At the dinner table, you can see bruising on the mother's face. The wife later claims he smashed her head into a wall. The stepfather lines the kids up to ask them if they heard form the mother. There is an implied threat but he doesn't actually become violent. (It was tense). The mother comes back home, to take her kids away with her. The father goes to block them from leaving. The mother is screaming at him and at her kids to come with her.
profanity 40 instances of the 'f' word, 23 of the 's' word, 10 of "hell," 7 of "damn," 1 of "balls," 1 of "fuzz nuts," 2 of "pussy," 14 of "a**," 2 of "piss," 2 of "butt," 5 of "bitch," 1 of "dick," 3 of "crap," and 7 of "sucks." 3 uses of "Christ," 4 uses of the name "Jesus," and 12 of "God." Also, 1 obscene hand gesture (the middle finger).
alcohol A man is an alcoholic; he drinks vodka in a few scenes and goes into a liquor store in others. A teenage boy drinks and smokes. There is one scene of marijuana use. There are a few parties with underage drinking (Jello shots, cans of beer, etc.)
frightening A teenager is bullied in one scene. A dinner table scene involving an abusive, alcoholic father is uncomfortable to watch. The mother has her head smashed against a wall (off-screen) and the father throws glasses at the young children, which they fortunately dodge. A couple argue in a few scenes. A mother breaks down crying as her son leaves home, and she realizes there probably won't be anymore major events in her life. The stepfather lines the kids up to ask them if they heard form the mother. There is an implied threat but he doesn't actually become violent. (It was tense). The mother comes back home, to take her kids away with her. The father goes to block them from leaving. The mother is screaming at him and at her kids to come with her. 14/15 year olds can watch this.
